What is the Difference Between a DJ and a Disc Jockey?

This is a common question we get asked at DJ Connection. The truth is a DJ and a disc jockey are the same thing. A DJ is an abbreviation of the word “Disc Jockey”. The word DJ has become a more popular description for the word Disc jockey because it is quicker and easier to say. Disc jockey use to refer to the DJ actually changing from disc to disc or vinyl to vinyl.

Today, the word disc jockey is slowly being phased out as it is no longer a truly accurate description. The reason being is that times have changed and many DJ’s now purchase music in a digital format .There are still many DJ’s that still use CD and vinyl, however the new industry term is Digital jockey, which still abbreviates to DJ. Throughout our site we will refer to a DJ as a Disc jockey and DJ.
